Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get my dealer license?

The full process takes about 2 months from start to approval. That includes gathering documents, filing the application, and going through the DMV inspection.

Do I have to come to New York in person?

Only once — when the DMV inspector visits the office. Everything else can be done virtually. Some clients also come to meet AK in person before getting started, which is always welcome.

Can I get a dealer license in my state instead of New York?

Right now AK primarily works with New York offices, but a NY retail dealer license allows you to legally buy and sell cars in all 50 states. It's also one of the most stable licensing states — the rules don't change often, so once you're licensed, you're set.

What is a dealer plate and how is it different from auction access?

A dealer plate is just a license plate that allows you to legally drive/transport vehicles you own but haven't yet registered. It does NOT give you auction access on its own. Auction access lets you buy cars from dealer-only auctions. These are two separate services — AK offers them individually or bundled together.

How many dealer plates will I get with the NY license?

New York typically approves two plates with a retail dealer license.

Can I use the office to store cars?

Yes. The office comes with parking spots — usually enough to store inventory. AK's offices in Upstate New York are designed to meet all DMV dealership requirements.

What auctions can I buy from once I'm licensed?

All major dealer-only auctions — Manheim, ACV Auctions, ADESA, and more. With your own license, you can buy cars in any state and sell them anywhere in the US.
